For my birthday, Mark gave me a gift certificate to have one of my old, underused cameras converted to infrared. We’ve both been playing around with IR filters for years, but the big drawback has always been the long exposure times—at least 120 seconds—which means lugging around a tripod and committing serious time to each shot. But with a converted camera, you can shoot handheld like normal, and the world still transforms in the wildest ways.
Right around that time, I found out that two fellow alumni from my high school art program were putting together a group show featuring artists who studied under our amazing teacher, Mr. Tilley. His influence on all of us was huge—he’s the kind of teacher who doesn’t just teach, but helps shape who you are. I was already excited about the new camera, but this show gave me a purpose: to create a series of infrared images in honor of the teacher who helped me find mine.
Since then, I’ve kept shooting and exploring, and I’ve included some of my favorite photos from the past eight months here.
